About

Bo Handcraft is inspired by modern and historical Nordic styles of handmade crafts in combination with nature themes. My name is Maria and I am a life-long creative being. Bo (mothers’s maiden name), is derived from the Old Danish/Swedish (Viking Age) word meaning the resident. Additionally, my late grandparents names translate to eagle (Arne) and goddess (Åse).

Brooch at Lindholm Høje, Denmark, 2023

My crafting style went through an evolution after visiting Denmark in 2019 and again in 2023 hence the rebranding. The logo is hand drawn by me and is influenced by the Urnes Viking style of art depicting a serpent. While on my trip to Denmark in 2023, I observed an original jewellery pendant at Lindholm Høje and fell in love with it so I was inspired to learn how to draw it myself. My version looks like a spirit.

Luna in Mooyah Bay, Nootka Sound, 2005

The previous name Luna Maria Jewelry was chosen for several reasons. Firstly, it represents the dark patches on the moon, which are made up of Basalt – comprising of volcanic rock. I first became aware of Basalt stone, after observing killer whales rubbing on Vancouver Island beaches. Next, there is the association to the famous killer whale, Luna L98, who I worked with in 2003 and left a lasting impression on my life.

Great grandparents (Marie) with grandmother Åse, Bindslev, Denmark circa 1925

Finally, I was named Maria after my Danish great grandmother. As a second generation Dane born on Vancouver Island, I often draw inspiration from my Nordic heritage for creative inspiration. I come from a family of artists, architects, singers, musicians, gardeners, gymnasts, teachers, crafters, potters, cooks, fishers, holistic practitioners, and farmers.

Maria at Blokhus, Denmark, 2023

Crafting in connection to my heritage feels like an activation of my DNA memory, almost transporting me into a different time and space – to where my ancestors came from. Something in me remembers. When I was at Blokhus for the first time, it felt familiar. Bo Handcraft, is my portal for accessing that feeling of familiarity, of home. When you adopt my work, I hope you also feel transported.

Everything I make is inspired by nature and is done as a form of therapeutic art and creative expression. When not creating, I can be found in nature, on my bike or playing with Lego.
